The Oak Park HandyHuman is a true local, family business that was born out of a lifelong love for making homes functional and beautiful.

We are a married couple (Aaron & Sarah) who live in an old house in Oak Park with our two wonderful kiddos. We have both worked in the housing industry for our entire careers and are obsessed with all things architecture, restoration and design. Believe it or not, one of the first conversations we had on the night we met was about a set of antique, prairie-style lamps. So yeah, you could say we’re a pair of bonafide home design nerds.

As second-generation home professionals, we grew up with a reverence for home construction and maintenance, and we bring that passion to all of our clients today. We strongly believe that nothing is more important than feeling comfortable and safe in your home, and that is the spirit that drives our approach to customer service and workmanship. Unlike other handyman companies in the area, we are located right here in Oak Park and have a small team that you’ll come to know as regular clients.

Since we’re also Oak Park homeowners, we’re intimately familiar with the joys and challenges of owning an old home. In fact, we’re currently tackling a whole slew of DIY projects to restore and expand our house, and we’re chronicling our journey (and all the ups and downs) in our blog .

Running this small, family business together is our dream and we feel so lucky to be doing what we love while also raising our family. One of our favorite parts of this work is meeting the amazing members of our Tri-Village (Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park) and helping them keep their homes happy, healthy and safe.

Aaron Johnson
Aaron is the hands-on talent at The Oak Park HandyHuman, Inc. He grew up helping his architect father maintain their 100+ year old home and has a lifelong interest in architecture, design and construction. He spent 3 years as the head Building Engineer for his wife’s property management company where he oversaw the care and maintenance of over 60 condo and townhome communities throughout the City of Chicago. Shortly after moving to Oak Park in January, 2015 he began doing handyman work on the side before deciding to pursue it as a full time business with his wife Sarah in spring of 2018. Aaron is a classic jack of all trades, knowing a little bit about everything and a lot about a few things. He loves doing something different everyday and his favorite projects are ones that involve creating something custom for a client and problem solving the best way to fix something.

Sarah Gullette-Johnson
Sarah is the behind-the-scenes expert at The Oak Park HandyHuman, Inc. She grew up around construction and home building as her childhood home was built by her grandfather (with a little help from her & her siblings of course). He even taught her how to refinish old furniture at the ripe old age of 12. This sparked her lifelong love of woodworking, architecture, art and design. Sarah has worked in the housing industry for over 22 years with previous experience with a large brokerage firm, real estate developer and property management. When she sold her property management company in 2015, she had 12 full-time employees and over 60 properties in her portfolio. Since moving to Oak Park with her husband and children in 2015 she has helped build their handyman business and enjoys the creative process of growing a business and helping clients to enjoy their homes.
